There’s nothing like back-to-school: new teachers, old friendships, and football time in Tennessee! Plus, Tennessee’s Tax-Free Weekend is almost here. It’s a chance to save on back-to-school items and other eligible purchases. Here are a few simple ways to stretch your budget during Tax-Free Weekend.
Shop Your House Before You Shop the Store 🏡
Take a quick look through closets, backpacks, desk drawers, and last year’s school supplies. Notebooks, folders, pencils, or backpacks you already have might have plenty of life left. Every item you already own leaves more room in your budget for things you really need.
Build Your List Before the Sales Start 📋✍️
Map out in advance the things you need to buy so your budget doesn’t take a hit from “while we’re here” purchases. Even without the sales tax, pricey impulse buys are no bargain.
Compare Prices Before You Buy 🏷️
Compare prices at both local stores and online retailers before you shop. Many offer special sales during Tax-Free Weekend. A lower sale price often saves more than the sales tax break alone.
Know What Qualifies for the Sales Tax Break ✅
Check out which items are eligible and which items aren’t. Some may surprise you. One example: While belts are eligible, individually sold belt buckles aren’t. Here are some basic guidelines on what qualifies for the tax break:
🧦 Clothing and Footwear
- Individual items priced at $100.00 or less
- Stock up on shoes, dresses, shirts, socks, and pants
🎒 School Supplies
- School and art supplies priced at $100.00 or less
- Think backpacks, binders, pens, pencils, paintbrushes, glazes, and drawing pads
💻 Computers
- Computers priced at $1,500.00 or less
- Desktops, laptops, and tablets are eligible
Items That Do NOT Qualify ❌
- Jewelry, handbags, and sports and rec equipment
- Smartphones, individually purchased software, printer supplies, and flash drives
