CREDIT UNIONS VS. BANKS
When you are deciding where to save and borrow, it can be confusing because there are so many choices available. A good place to start is learning the difference between a bank and a credit union. Here's a breakdown on how credit unions and banks differ.

Credit Unions

Credit unions are unique because they are entirely member-owned. When you join a credit union, you "open" a member share which represents your ownership in the financial cooperative. It's essentially a small deposit or account that grants you membership and a stake in the organization. That's why when you are part of a credit union, you are called a "Member". When you become a Member of KTVAECU^®, you also get a voice in the decisions we make.

Structure/Philosophy — Not for profit, but for service.

Banks

Banks are structured similarly to a public company and controlled by profits and shareholders. They are typically more “corporate,” meaning their decisions are made by boards, committees, and profit, rather than the voice of their customers.

Structure/Philosophy — Banks are corporations which exist to earn a profit for shareholders.

Ownership — Shareholder (investor) owned and controlled.

Earning — All profits are distributed to the stockholders in proportion to the number of shares owned.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance

Unexpected things happen to all of us. That's why we offer each Member (age 18 or older) up to $1,500.00 of complimentary AD&D insurance ⁶ , underwritten by Minnesota Life Insurance Company. All coverage reduces by 50.00% at age 70 and older, regardless of when you enroll.

Hospital Accident Plan

Sometimes accidents happen – that’s why we offer a Hospital Accident Plan (HAP) ⁷ ! With a HAP, Members receive:

Plan pays $900.00 per day for each day of hospitalization - up to 365 days for any one injury
Hospital benefits are doubled to $1,800.00 for each day in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) - up to 365 days
Pays $450.00 for hospital emergency room as an outpatient visit within 72 hours of the accident

Recuperative Care Plan

Our Recuperative Care Plan ⁸ helps eligible Members receive financial assistance for hospitalization due to a covered sickness or accident. It also provides help in covering the expenses of recuperation after leaving the hospital.

More Than Just a Loan

Protect Your Loan

Life can be wonderful. But it can also get complicated when unexpected things happen. That's why we offer Payment Protection with TruStage™ ⁹ , a loan protection option that could cancel your monthly payments or your loan balance in the event of death, disability, or involuntary unemployment (accidental dismemberment, terminal illness, hospitalization, family medical leave, the loss of life of a non-protected dependent).

Additional Insurance Coverage

Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP) ¹⁰ provides a little extra coverage beyond your auto insurance. If your vehicle is stolen or totaled, majority of insurance companies will only pay up to the book value of the vehicle, leaving you to pay the difference. GAP covers the difference between what the insurance company pays toward the loan, what is left of the loan balance, and the deductible up to $1,000.00. GAP through the Credit Union also provides $1,000.00 toward the purchase of a replacement vehicle if financed through the Credit Union within 90 days.

Travelers Auto/Home Insurance for Members

As a Member of KTVAECU^®,you may also be eligible for discounted protection rates not offered to the general public through Travelers Insurance ¹¹ .
